Plant Upgrades/Expansions

Intimate knowledge and understanding of plant operations is a core strength at C&I. So when it comes to plant engineering – upgrades, expansions and retrofits – we have extensive experience across all disciplines and project teams.

Our associates excel at working in operating facilities.

Working in an existing facility – as opposed to a green field project – presents a host of challenges. It requires a different skill set to discover client preferences and the integrate effectively with existing designs. Our people travel to these sites during the design phase of nearly all our projects.

Our Plant Design group, filled with associates who have

earned Professional Piping Designer certifications, is especially adept at gathering the data to design upgrades and expansions that are not only efficient and optimized, but that don’t disrupt operations currently under way. We are so strong in this area and have developed such a reputation that on several projects where major contractors were working on complex systems, we were called in to handle coordination of the work interfaces.

Project management defines scope, schedule, cost and risk.

Feasibility Studies

We analyze our options and narrow our focus to the best solution for our client. The estimate we generate here is tighter than the conceptual stage.

Front-End Engineering & Design (FEED/Schedule A)

Our FEED packages finalize scope and technical requirements prior to detailed design, identifying potential challenges and helping minimize possible rework. Procurement begins our two-phased bidding process by obtaining quotes on all the engineered items and equipment. Our expertise during this stage sets our clients up for success and allows us to generate a much tighter overall estimate.

Detailed Design

After the conceptual and feasibility studies have been completed, and preliminary design has yielded a reasonably tight estimate of costs, the real intense design work can begin. This is where we put together all drawings for construction and maintenance, where electrical schematics, foundation plans and other detailing all come together. This is also when we begin assembling parts, ordering piping and ensuring that everything fits.

There is a great deal of coordination involved when executing projects. Our strength as a company is that our teams have worked together on many projects over a number of years. Collaboration among the different disciplines has been fine tuned through experience. And we have proven procedures and methods that make coordination reliable.

Construction Packages

Working from our detailed design, we manage building, implementation and start up. This includes overseeing and supporting the construction effort, continued procurement work and any logistics that may be required. We are also committed to training a facility’s staff on operation and maintenance of the unit(s), if necessary.

  • NSPS Subpart Ja Flare Compliance

In order for this Midsouth client to comply with the regulatory requirements of NSPS Subpart Ja, we brought in to address hydrocracker, hydrobon, crude and coker flares. Scope included installing new Thermo Scientific SOLA II Flare Sulfur On-Line Analyzers to measure the full sulfur range, as well as new analyzers to measure flare gas constituents and calculate BTU content of the flare gas. It also called for installing a new flow meters, new steam flow control valves and we added control logic and new supplement gas control stations.

  • Refinery Optimization Project

C&I devised scopes of work to optimize a refinery in the Midwest. Our involvement in the project included work for: the FCCU scrubber, purge treatment unit, soda ash system, olefin/amine debottlenecking, condensate recovery, outfall water line sump, and electrical infrastructure.

  • Desalter Feasibility

A refinery in the Midwest sought to improve the removal of salts, solids and water from virgin crude stocks in the Crude Distillation Unit. They commissioned C&I to develop a +/-15% cost estimate for a new two-stage desalter system. The design crude slate was a blend of Canadian tar sands synthetic crudes. C&I defined the physical properties of the blend in the conceptual package, performing an independent HYSYS simulation to confirm properties were correctly identified.
