After multiple switchgear failures and a total electrical blackout, the reactor switchgear and bus duct were replaced to increase reliability. Also, to extend the useful life of the existing feeder switchgear, a 65’ x 120’ pre-engineered steel building was installed to completely enclose this gear. The building was equipped with air conditioning to reduce the heat load on the Switchgear during the summer months.
Objectives: Replace the Reactor Switchgear and Bus Duct without Outages. Enclose the existing outdoor main feeder switchgear to extend service life.
Benefits: Coordination with civil and electrical team members allowed a pre-engineered building to be designed and installed around existing power distribution, steel, overhead power lines and existing conduits. Coordination with operations allowed for the entire project to be implemented without any outages. Creating a project team that included our client and the electrical contractor allowed for site-based design considerations, which resulted in a cost-effective installation.
