Multiple system outages necessitated the upgrade of the existing alkyl unit control system. The system modifications were designed to automatically sequence isolation valves and shutdown equipment in the event of failures that could result in the release of hydrofluoric acid. A Triconex PLC replaced the existing control system. The operator interface was enhanced to allow the operators greater control in the event of an Incident. Sequential logic was reviewed and upgraded to current practices.
Objectives: Install a reliable Control System with which the Plant had operating and maintenance experience. Allow the Plant DCS system to display the Mitigation system parameters. Designed a system that would leverage the number of pre turnaround construction activities to limit the turnaround duration.
Benefits: Coordinated in-house operator interface and simulation programming with PLC integrator ad plant programming personnel. Utilized computer simulation of process to fine tune operator interface as well as training operators prior to shutdown. Designed redundant, fiber optic Ethernet LAN. Programmed alarming, failure detection and switch over logic.
