At C&I, we pride ourselves on providing continual training, both to new and existing team members. Each new associate receives hands-on instruction, often shadowing personnel from their engineering discipline. This enables new employees to become familiar with C&I’s design philosophy and approach to successful project execution. Great care, time, and attention are given during this training.
Individual discipline-specific education is of high importance to C&I. We spend a considerable amount of time and effort to ensure our engineers and designers are equipped with the latest tools and industry knowledge. Safety training also commands a considerable amount of attention.
Workshops are conducted on a continual basis as well.
C&I’s Process Engineering Department annually conducts a Refinery Training Program. This extensive, 12 week course introduces and expands upon all process and functional areas in a modern refinery. It covers the history of refining, from the beginnings in the late 1800’s in Pennsylvania, to today’s’ modern clean fuels refinery.
HYSYS training is also carried out regularly. This keeps our process group equipped with the very latest understanding of this powerful process simulation software. This instruction is also offered to our clients.
Flow sheet simulation is a powerful and important tool that C&I’s Process Engineers must be competent with. It’s easy to get "answers" from a
computer program, but are the "answers" correct? There are many options in each simulation software package that if chosen incorrectly, can lead to a poor design - or worse - one that does not meet the project requirements when it is put into service.
C&I Process Engineers must be able to respond to our client's preferences for using specific versions of simulation software with confidence. All engineers who join C&I's Process Engineering Department (new graduates, juniors, and even senior engineers who might need refreshing or have not worked with flow sheet simulators before) attend an intensive one-year training program in which they are qualified on the fundamentals of the various simulation software packages available. A heavy emphasis is placed on Aspentech's HYSYS .
The basis for this training program is a text book written by a recognized industry expert, Gerry Kaes, titled Refinery Process Modeling - A Practical Guide to Steady State Modeling of Petroleum Processes. Throughout the course, attendees develop detailed simulation models of various refinery processes (crude, vacuum, FCC, Alkylation) with an emphasis on selecting the proper thermodynamic package, reconciling the model to the actual plant, and proper use of the models predicative capabilities which must include understanding the shortcomings of the particular simulator being used.
C&I’s Project Controls Department periodically holds Scheduling and Cost Estimating Workshops. This seminar provides hands-on instruction with two of the industry’s most powerful scheduling and cost estimating software programs. Many of the top U.S. refineries have sent their personnel to these workshops.
C&I also conducts a Successful Relationship Building Series on an ongoing basis. This coursework focuses on various aspects of individual and client relationship building, including; understanding individual differences, communication essentials, leveraging relationships, small talk, ethics, presentation and facilitation techniques, and business and social etiquette.
